I saw this article today about the traditionally Nordic practice of leaving their babies outside for naps. They believe the babies sleep better with the fresh air. At first when I saw the photos of these baby carriages parked outside amongst huge piles of snow, I thought, ‘What the heck?’. But after reading into it, I’m totally with the idea. If the babes are bundled and the carriage, or pram, is made for such weather then go for it. (And just for the folks wondering if this is neglect, they use baby monitors to see what baby is up to.) A parent explained her point of view:
“It is a common thing here in Iceland for parents to have their babies sleep outside. Many parents believe good, fresh air is a key factor for a good sleep for babies, and also believe it’s good for their health and will make them stronger.” – Arnar Hjaltestad, Icelandic guide
I love the idea. Maybe they are onto something for avoiding the winter doldrums, as well. Being outside to breathe in the air and catch some Vitamin D has got to be good for you. And, wouldn’t it be nice to not have to worry about leaving your baby outside the coffee shop? Apparently, the safety aspect is not an issue. How wonderful!
